Creating a database

From a site’s Databases page, create a database and one or more database users, each with its own password. Databases are MariaDB, and every database user’s grants are limited to that customer’s own databases — nothing shared with any other tenant on the server.

Tip

Choose a long, random password (24 characters or more). Because tenants share a database server, password strength — not just secrecy — is what keeps one customer’s database safe from another’s credential-guessing attempts.

Database studio

The built-in Database studio gives you a browser-based way to work with your data without installing anything:

• Browse and edit rows
• Run queries
• Import a SQL dump
• Export a database

It’s the same convenience JetBackup and phpMyAdmin-style tools provide elsewhere, built into your panel.

Connecting with a desktop client

MariaDB is never exposed on the public internet — connect through an SSH tunnel instead, using the credentials from SSH and SFTP:

ssh -L 3306:localhost:3306 -p 2222 <site-handle>@ssh.example.com

With the tunnel open, point TablePlus, DBeaver, Sequel Ace or any other MySQL/MariaDB client at 127.0.0.1:3306 using your database’s own username and password. The tunnel is what makes this safe: the connection between your machine and the server is encrypted and authenticated by your SSH key, and the database itself never has to accept connections from outside the server.

In TablePlus, DBeaver and similar tools, this is usually set up as an “SSH tunnel” or “SSH connection” option on the connection form — point it at your SSH hostname, port 2222, your site handle as the SSH user, and your private key, then fill in the database host as localhost (or 127.0.0.1) and your database credentials as usual.

Limits

Your plan sets how many databases you can create and how many concurrent connections they can accept (maxDBConnections). Both are shown on the site’s Databases page alongside what you’re currently using.
